Russian journalists endorse Putin unanimously, discreetly

27 12 2006

MOSCOW: At a recent Kremlin Correspondents Dinner in honor of Vladimir Putin, Russian journalists expressed their unanimous approval of the President–but were careful to do so in the most discreet, respectful way imaginable. The Roastmaster of the event, comedian Yakov Smirnoff, was allowed five jokes, scripted weeks in advance and screened by the Federal Security Service. Laughter was suppressed during mentions of Putin’s name but strongly encouraged during jokes about Chechnya.

Several journalists were missing from the event, including one journalist who reported that another journalist had never returned from the bathroom.
